Edward K Miller
GM Edward K. Miller (Ret.) Born in Reading, PA March 10, 1936 where he grew up and lived until graduating from Reading High School at an early age to join the U.S. Army in 1951. Shortly after joining he was assigned to the 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment and was sent overseas to serve in the final years of the Korean conflict. After the Korean conflict he was transferred to the 101st Airborne Division where he took on an interest in Asian cultures and their languages. He was sent to Chinese language school at Fort Ord to receive his first formal foreign language training where he fell in love with the Asian language and cultures and spent the next 17 years in the Asia region specializing in China. After language school he was sent to train with a new unit that was forming, the 1st Special Forces Group where he found his calling. From here he found himself in many strange places around the world teaching and training alongside many new friends. During the Viet Nam conflict he was with the 5th Special Forces Group where he spent plenty of time in country training the National forces. He served in many posts and positions during his career to include: Senior Enlisted Advisor to National Chinese Special Warfare Center and National Security Bureau, Chief Enlisted instructor for Special Forces Strategic Reconnaissance, Senior Enlisted Advisor for Readiness Group Ft Sam Houston. Retired from the U.S. Army after 31 years and then worked in the Civil Service sector where he served another 20 years and retired a GM14 where he was the Director Of Planning, Edward K. Miller
Security and Operations for Ft Sam Houston. All together he served the U.S. Government for 51 years of his amazing life. After Retiring he was able to relax in between volunteering to spend time with his wife of 51 years Sue and his 4 children Kenny, Yvonne (Richardson), Bradley and Brian his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. During this time he was able to travel to places like Russia, China and around the U.S. to see many places he has always wanted to. His Father Frank Lucian Miller, Mother Sally Miller, Daughters Cheryl Lynn, Vicky Lee and Grandson Kane Alton Kekoa Miller preceded him in death. In all of his spare time after retiring he found time to serve on the following posts: AMEDD Museum Foundation Board - Board of Director/Treasurer, VFW - Quartermaster Post 8541 2004-05, Veterans of Greater S.A. Assoc. - VP 2005/Pres 2006, Special Forces Assoc. Chapter XV - Secretary, Treasurer, VP and 6 Terms President, Chairman of the Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery Memorial Committee, Lifetime member of VFW. Awards and Ribbons include: Legion Of Merit, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Viet Nam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge with Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Rep of Viet Nam), Army Commendation Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster), Service Commendation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Staff Service Medal 2nd Class, Good Conduct Medal (10th Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon (2nd Award), United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Master Parachutist Badge. In 1997 he was honored as the AUSA Regional DOD civilian of the year as well he received the Special Forces Association Member of the year award. He was involved in many organizations and helped many people in his life. Near the end of his very special time with us his passion was with the organization Returning Heroes Home, which helps wounded warriors and their families heal and reconnect their lives.
